Note: This Gold Mohur of the ‘Azamnagar-Gokak' mint is an unreported and unrecorded specimen in the major numismatic catalogues, apparently struck from dies intended for the silver issue (cf. KM # 364.5). The Regnal Year 6 recorded on the coin was likely continued from the preceding ruler, Shah Alam Bahadur’s final regnal year. Gokak, a fortified town situated northeast of Belgaum, emerged as an important military and administrative centre in the late Mughal Deccan following the Mughal conquest of Bijapur. After Prince ‘Azam captured Belgaum in 1687, the region was reorganized under the Sarkar of ‘Azamnagar and subsequently entrusted to Nawab Abdul Rauf Diler Khan of Savanur. Although no coins of Aurangzeb are known from Gokak itself, the mint became active during the turbulent war of succession after Aurangzeb’s death, when exceedingly rare coins were struck there in the name of Kam Bakhsh. These early Gokak issues are remarkable for their refined engraving and superior calligraphy, suggesting operation under an imperial-style atelier.In the subsequent reign of Shah Alam Bahadur, the mint-name appears not merely as “Gokak” but as “‘Azamnagar-Gokak”, explicitly reflecting the town’s administrative affiliation with the Sarkar of ‘Azamnagar rather than indicating an alternative name for Gokak. A peculiar orthographic feature of these coins is the rendering of Gokak as “Goh Kak”, perhaps preserving a regional pronunciation.
