Note: This Akbar's rupee with Persian word “Rupaya” on it belongs to celebrated decorative Ilahi series coinage which emerged following Akbar’s ideological reforms after issuance of the Mazhar in AH987 (1579 AD), effectively reducing the authority of the Ulama within the Empire and laying foundation for the Din i Ilahi established in AH990 (1582 AD). These reforms were soon reflected in the imperial coinage, where traditional Islamic legends were gradually replaced with the famous Ilahi invocation “Allahu Akbar Jalla Jalaluhu,” a phrase often interpreted as carrying both divine and imperial connotations.<o:p></o:p>The present issue belongs to the refined decorative series of the Ilahi coinage, with both obverse and reverse legends enclosed within an elegant floral design characteristic of Akbar’s mature numismatic style. By AH992 (1584 AD),&nbsp;Akbar had introduced the solar based Tarikh i Ilahi calendar commencing from Nauroz, replacing Hijri dating upon many imperial issues with solar months, an innovation later continued under Jahangir. Coins of this series were struck in both square and round fabric at Agra during alternate months and remain amongst the most artistically ambitious issues of the Mughal Empire.<o:p></o:p>During Ilahi years 47 and 48, corresponding approximately to AH 1010–1012 (1601–1603 AD), Akbar introduced an extraordinaryexperimental series at Agra explicitly bearing the denominations “Rupiya,” “Darb,” and “Charan” for the full, half, and quarter rupee respectively, denominations recorded by Abu’l Fazl in the Ain i Akbari. Surviving “Rupiya” specimens are presently known only from a handful of months including Ardibihisht, Khurdad, Tir, Shahrewar, Di, and Farwardin, the earliest recorded example belonging to Ardibihisht of Ilahi year 47.<o:p></o:p>Amongst collectors, these “Rupiya” issues are regarded as the pinnacle of coinage from Akbar's reign. Combining extreme rarity, historical importance, artistic refinement, and direct association with the Ilahi reforms, they remain one of the most coveted silver coinages of the Mughal Empire. With recent publications such as Odyssey of the Rupee, these rare Ilahi issues of Akbar can now be identified as the earliest known coins to explicitly bear the word “Rupiya,” making them far more than simple experimental issues and placing them amongst the most important pieces in the monetary history of the Indian subcontinent, representing the earliest appearance of a term that would later define the currency tradition of much of South Asia for centuries.<o:p></o:p>This Shahrewar month's “Rupiya”&nbsp;coin is being offered in for the first time in any Indian auction.<o:p></o:p>
