Note: After the demise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1680 AD, his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaja (r. 1680–1689), the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, ascended the throne. A capable and courageous ruler, he spent much of his reign resisting Mughal expansion under Aurangzeb.<o:p></o:p>He continued the established Maratha coinage, issuing copper Shivarai coins bearing the legend “Shree / Raja / Shambhu” in Devanagari script. Due to his short and war-torn reign, these coins were struck in limited numbers and are extremely rare today.<o:p></o:p>
