Note: According to tradition, while searching for a place to build his capital, the Chola king witnessed a rooster defeating his royal elephant - seen as a divine sign of the site's strength. He established his capital at that spot, later known as Uraiyur (Kozhiyur, meaning "City of the Rooster").
