Humayun focused Mughal forces towards the strategic fort of Chunar, a move heavily criticized by later chroniclers, as it consumed valuable time while Sher Shah Suri took advantage by advancing into Bengal, capturing and looting Gaur, and transferring treasure and Afghan households into the secure hill fort of Rohtas. At the same time, growing ambitions amongst Humayun’s brothers further weakened imperial stability, with Kamran effectively controlling Kabul and Punjab, Hindal asserting influence around Mewat and Agra, and Askari remaining unreliable in support of the emperor. After finally breaking Chunar in Jumada II AH 944 / late 1537 CE and entering Gaur in AH 945 / 1538 CE, Humayun chose to remain there re-establishing imperial courtly life instead of immediately pursuing Sher Shah, a catastrophic delay which allowed Sher Shah to cut Mughal communications and isolate the emperor deep within Bengal, laying the foundations for the later disasters at Chausa and Kannauj.
