Akbar (AH 963-1014 / 1556-1605 AD), Urdu Zafar Qarin (Camp of Victory)&nbsp;Mint, Silver Square 1/8 Rupee (2 Annas), Obv: Arabic legend “Allahu Akbar”,&nbsp;Rev: Persian legend “zarb Urdu Zafar Qarin” in two lines, 1.28g, 18.1 × 17.6mm, (Unrecorded and Unpublished for the Type in Major Numismatic References), gorgeous, with an attractive original patina, exceptionally well struck and of choice quality, AU-UNC, Unique.<o:p></o:p>

Note: Of exceptional numismatic interest, the present 1/8 Rupee of Urdu Zafar Qarin represents a hitherto unrecorded legend arrangement for the denomination. Other known specimens of the 1/8 Rupee from this mint, including the examples recorded on Zeno, employ a different arrangement of the legends. No other specimen with “Urdu Zafar Qarin” arranged in two lines on the reverse has presently been traced in the principal references and auction records consulted. The present specimen may therefore be regarded as an unpublished and presently unique variety.<o:p></o:p>The name Urdu Zafar Qarin, or “Camp associated with Victory,” belongs to the Mughal tradition of issuing coinage from the imperial camp. Under Akbar, the imperial camp functioned effectively as a mobile court, accompanying the emperor on royal progresses and military campaigns, complete with administrative establishments, workshops, bazaars and a mint. Abu’l Fazl, in the Ain-i-Akbari, records a mint styled Mu‘askar-i-Iqbal, or “Camp of Good Fortune,” although this name has not yet been identified on the coins themselves. The Urdu mint thus formed part of the economic and administrative machinery that travelled with the imperial establishment, providing coinage wherever the court and army were stationed.<o:p></o:p>This mobile minting tradition continued under Akbar’s successors; under Jahangir it is particularly represented by the evocative mint-name Urdu dar rah-i-Dakhan, “Camp on the road to the Deccan.” Combined with its otherwise unrecorded legend arrangement and presently unique status, the present coin represents an exceptionally rare survival from Akbar’s mobile imperial minting tradition and an important addition to the recorded coinage of Urdu Zafar Qarin.<o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>
