Note: Formerly the capital of the Nizam Shahi Sultanate, Ahmadnagar occupied an important place in the Mughal administration of the Deccan. The city was first annexed by Akbar, though Mughal authority over the region remained contested and repeatedly shifted during the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan as the Mughals continued their long struggle for control of the Deccan. Only under Aurangzeb was Mughal rule firmly consolidated across much of the region, with Ahmadnagar emerging as an important administrative and military centre. The city remained an active mint throughout this period and continued to strike coinage well into the eighteenth century despite the increasingly complex political situation in the Deccan. The present issue belongs to the reign of Muhammad Shah, a period marked by the gradual decline of Mughal authority and the growing influence of the Marathas, yet one in which Ahmadnagar continued to function as a provincial mint of the empire. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Seldom encountered in the market and rarely seen in public auctions.
