Note: Trichanapalli, variously recorded as Trichnopoly, Trichinopoly, Trichanapalli, and modern Tiruchirappalli, is an important historic city situated on the banks of the Cauvery River in South India. Formerly the capital of the Nayaka rulers of Madura, it briefly came under Mughal influence during Aurangzeb's southern campaigns. Contemporary sources record that the Queen of Madura submitted to the Mughal Empire in 1694 AD (AH 1106-1107), following which coins appear to have been struck in the emperor's name. These issues are of considerable historical importance, as Trichanapalli represents the southernmost mint known for the Mughal Empire, extending beyond the previously accepted limit of Jinji (Nusratgadh). The present coin is most likely a commemorative victory issue struck to mark the establishment of Khutba and Sikka in Aurangzeb's name following the submission of the region.
