Puddester Collection.&nbsp; Stewart, then Mint Master at the Bombay Mint, initiated a series of experimental copper pattern issues following delays in the installation of advanced imported minting machinery from Calcutta. Drawing upon his technical initiative, he successfully fabricated local machinery and prepared a comprehensive set of trial dies to demonstrate feasibility for production approval. These crude but important experimental strikings, executed with evident haste, were intended solely for evaluation purposes.The series comprises at least nine known pattern denominations struck between 1820 and 1821 AD, including pie, 1/4 Anna, 1/2 Anna, and 1 Anna pieces, along with additional experimental varieties across the same fractional system. These issues are noted for inconsistencies in design and occasional inaccuracies in date representation, reflecting their prototype status and limited attention to calendrical precision. According to Dr. Stevens, the machinery constructed by Stewart in 1819 AD directly led to the production of these experimental patterns during 1820–1821 AD. Fred Pridmore records only two examples in his corpus (Pridmore 334–335), highlighting their extreme rarity and fragmentary survival.Following Stewart’s untimely death due to illness during travel shortly after the trial strikings, the project was abandoned. With the subsequent arrival of new imported machinery at the Bombay Mint, Stewart’s experimental dies and patterns were left unutilized. Today, these 1820–1821 Bombay Mint pattern issues remain among the most elusive early 19th-century experimental coinages of British India, with the present 1/4 Anna representing one of the rare surviving examples and possibly the finest known specimen.<o:p></o:p>
