Note:&nbsp;With only a single Mohur known bearing the epithet Baldah Fakhira at the Burhanpur mint, the present silver fraction is almost certainly a Nisar issue struck from dies intended for a gold coin. The epithet Baldah Fakhira, meaning “The Splendid City”, remains exceptionally rare and is presently known only from the unique Mohur and the present specimen.<o:p></o:p>No AH or regnal year is visible, however issues bearing this epithet are generally attributable to the earliest years of Aurangzeb's reign and are typically encountered with the Muhiyuddin obverse. The present piece is therefore particularly interesting as it bears the later couplet obverse arranged in an unusual tripartite format. The Mohur from which this fraction appears to derive has been matched to a specimen attributed to the year Ahd, although such an attribution cannot be confirmed for the present coin owing to the incomplete preservation of the legends.<o:p></o:p>During the opening years of Aurangzeb's reign, Burhanpur remained one of the most important Mughal cities in the Deccan. Following the War of Succession, the city served as a major military and administrative centre, controlling the principal route between northern India and the Deccan at a time when imperial authority was being consolidated and Mughal attention was increasingly turning towards the growing challenge posed by Shivaji and the Marathas.<o:p></o:p>
