As noted by Pridmore, prior to 1757, the East India Company relied on Mughal mints under local rulers like the Nawab of Bengal and lacked authority to strike coins independently—reflecting their limited influence in India. However, following Robert Clive’s victories at Plassey (1757) and Buxar (1764), the Company secured real political power. In 1765, the Mughal emperor granted them revenue rights over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, and by 1771, they began issuing coins from their own mint in Calcutta.
