French traveler Tavernier mentions it as a major stop on the western coastal route, favored over the dangerous inland journey. In 1638, the English established a factory there, only to face destruction in 1661 at the hands of&nbsp;Chhatrapati Shivaji, marking the town’s volatile political atmosphere.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>Aurangzeb, after moving to the Deccan in 1681, launched multiple campaigns through this region.
