Note: In 1856, the British East India Company deposed the Nawab of Awadh on grounds of corruption and annexed the state. This and other high-handed actions by the British caused simmering resentment among the natives, which broke out in a revolt by Indian troops in 1857, called the "Sepoy Rebellion". They proclaimed their allegiance to the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II, and also returned Brijis Qadr, son of the former Nawab, to the throne of Awadh.
