Mankera is situated about 130 km north of Multan. At the beginning of the 19th century it was ruled by a semi-independent ruler under the Nawab of Dera Ismail Khan. In 1821 AD, Ranjit Singh sent an army against Mankera and Dera Ismail Khan as a result of which Mankera with its strong fort was annexed to his kingdom. This rupee would have been struck shortly after the annexation. Only two years are known for this type VS 1879 and 1880. This Rupee type, previously referred to as the &ldquo;Malkerian&rdquo; Rupee has been attributed by Herrli.
