Note: Sultan Zain al-'Abidin (AH 823–874 / AD 1420–1470), popularly remembered as Budshah ("The Great King"), is universally regarded as the most illustrious ruler of the Kashmir Sultanate. Ascending the throne as Shahi Khan and assuming the regal title Zain al-'Abidin, he enjoyed the longest and one of the most prosperous reigns in Kashmir's medieval history. Renowned for his enlightened and tolerant administration, he reversed many of the restrictive policies of his predecessors, encouraged religious harmony, promoted learning and craftsmanship, and established Arabic as the language of his court. His reign ushered in a golden age of political stability, economic prosperity, and cultural renaissance.His far-reaching monetary reforms resulted in the issue of an impressive series of gold, silver, and bronze coinage, establishing the standard for Kashmir Sultanate coinage until the Mughal annexation under Emperor Akbar. The present Gold Dinar, struck at the Dar al-Saltanat Kashmir Mint in AH 851, bears the elegant Persian titulature Na'ib Amir al-Mu'minin, Qutb al-Dunya wa al-Din, Abu al-Mujahid al-'Adil Zain al-'Abidin al-Sultan on the obverse, with the Shahada within a circle on the reverse, accompanied by the date and mint in the margin. Gold issues of Zain al-'Abidin are of exceptional rarity and rank among the finest numismatic expressions of Kashmir's Golden Age, representing the enduring legacy of one of the Sultanate's greatest sovereigns.<o:p></o:p>
