The Habshi rulers of Bengal were of Abyssinian (Habshi) origin, deriving their name from the Arabic term al-Habash, referring to present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. Many Habshis were brought to India as military slaves and guards, where some rose to prominent positions in the royal courts. In 1487 AD, the Habshi commander Barbak Shah seized power after overthrowing Sultan Jalal al-Din Fath Shah and established Habshi rule in Bengal. His reign was short-lived, lasting about a year, and he was succeeded by Saif al-Din Firuz Shah, the most distinguished ruler of the Habshi dynasty.<o:p></o:p>This rare gold tanka of Saif al-Din Firuz Shah was probably struck as a ceremonial issue. The coin is beautifully preserved, displaying a bold strike, lustrous surfaces, and clear legends. Only two gold coin types are known for this ruler, making this an important rarity of the Bengal Sultanate.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>The Top-Pop status at NGC further emphasizes&nbsp;its rarity and the difficulty of acquiring such an important piece, with few comparable examples available on the market.<o:p></o:p>
