Note: This Shahrukhi, a silver denomination derived from the Timurid and Shaybanid monetary traditions, was issued only during the early years of Akbar’s reign. Lahore mint issues are rare, and specimens with clear dates are seldom encountered. The present coin is particularly noteworthy for its superior quality, exhibiting a full flan, complete strike, and clear legends-features rarely seen on this traditionally crude and often worn series. AH 963 (1555–56 AD) witnessed one of the most dramatic transitions in Mughal history. On 13 Rabi I 963 AH (24 January 1556 AD), Humayun died unexpectedly in Delhi, scarcely six months after recovering the Mughal throne. With much of northern India still contested and Hemu advancing rapidly through the Gangetic plain, the future of the dynasty remained uncertain. Under these circumstances, the thirteen-year-old Akbar was proclaimed emperor at Kalanaur on 2 Rabi II 963 AH (14 February 1556 AD), where the Khutba was read in his name and coinage was struck across Kalanaur and the surrounding provinces in recognition of the new sovereign. Dated AH 963 (1555–56 AD), the present Shahrukhi ranks amongst the earliest coinage issued in Akbar's name and belongs to a brief period before the Mughal position had been secured. Struck at a moment when the empire itself hung in the balance, it represents one of the first tangible expressions of Akbar's authority following his accession. Few coins can be so closely associated with the opening days of a reign, and fewer still with a ruler whose legacy would come to define an era of South Asian history.&nbsp;
