Note: The campaign of 1817–1818 AD, under Governor-General Lord Hastings, marked the decisive British operations against the Maratha Confederacy and the Pindari bands. The Pindaris, irregular plundering groups operating with varying degrees of Maratha association, were systematically suppressed during this period, while coordinated military actions were simultaneously directed against the major Maratha powers, including the Peshwa at Pune, the Holkars of Indore, the Scindias of Gwalior, and the Bhonsles of Nagpur.By 1818 AD, the Pindari forces had been effectively dismantled, and Maratha resistance was conclusively broken, culminating in the surrender of the Peshwa and the end of the Peshwa administration. According to Puddester’s reference, the terminal phase of these operations is also cited in relation to the year 1818 AD, marking the formal consolidation of British authority over most of India. This campaign represents a major turning point in Indian history, establishing undisputed British paramountcy across the subcontinent.
