Madras Presidency, 1807-First European Style Issue, Silver, ½ Rupee,&nbsp;Open Lotus design, struck in the name of&nbsp;Alamgir II, Obv:&nbsp;Persian legend "Sikka Mubarak, Badshah Ghazi" with Hijri year 1172 Hijri,Rev: Persian legend "Sana 6 Julus" and "Zarb Arkat"&nbsp;at the bottom,5.88g, 21.38mm, (KM # 401) original patina, and superb strike quality, about extremely fine,&nbsp;Extremely Rare.<o:p></o:p>

Note: According to F. Pridmore, the successful modernization of Bengal’s coinage and its adoption of European-style minting prompted the Madras Council to reform its own minting system. Following recommendations made in 1799, a new mint was established at Black Town in 1806 and equipped with machinery transferred from Calcutta. European-style coinage commenced with copper issues in 1807, followed by silver later that year and gold in 1808. Proclamations issued in 1807 introduced a standardized series of silver denominations, including the Double Rupee, Rupee, Half Rupee, Quarter Rupee, and silver fanams, struck directly from imported Spanish Dollars. The Rupee was standardized at 186.70 troy grains with proportionate fractional denominations. An interesting numismatic feature of these early Madras issues is the presence of a minute privy mark on the rupee and its fractional denominations, identifying dies originally prepared at the Calcutta Mint.<o:p></o:p>&nbsp;
