Jahangir (AH 1014-1037 /1605-1627 AD), Ahmada Nagar&nbsp;Mint احمدا نگر (not Ahmednagar), Silver Rupee, ‘Zeenat’ Couplet, Obv: Persian couplet legend “az naqsh naam Shah Jahangir Shah Akbar” (“From the impression of the name of Jahangir, son of Shah Akbar”), within a partially visible dotted border, Rev:&nbsp;Persian couplet “Dar Ahmada nagar Ain Sikka Daad Zeenat Zar” (“At Ahmada nagar, this coin bestowed adornment upon gold”), also within a dotted border,&nbsp;11.4g, 18.65mm,&nbsp;(Unlisted in KM),&nbsp;test marks, partial dotted border visible, choice quality, XF-AU, Exceedingly Rare. &nbsp;

Note: Initially Akbar consolidated the fort of Ahmadnagar, and other Deccan forts in AH 1008/09 (1600). However, quickly the Ahmednagar Nizam Shahi fell to Malik Ambar which resulted in repeated campaigns by Jahangir and Khurram (Later Shah Jahan) which ended by the surrender of Deccan on 29th Farwardin AH1026 (18 April 1617) to the Mughal Empire.<o:p></o:p>This issue was made likely at the initial surrender of Deccan in AH 1026 marking a temporary end to the Nizam Shahi, however Malik Ambar’s continuous rebellion from AH 1027 led to multiple campaigns by the imperial Mughals to capture Deccan reaching consolidation under the reign of Aurangzeb but later becoming fragmented yet again in the reign of later Mughals.<o:p></o:p>The coin bears the rare poetic couplet: “Dar Ahmadnagar in sikka dad zinat zar Az naqsh nam Jahangir Shah Akbar”<o:p></o:p>(“At Ahmadnagar, this coin gave beauty to gold, from the impression of the name of Jahangir, son of Shah Akbar.”)<o:p></o:p>Unlike the standard imperial legends seen on most Mughal issues, Jahangir’s poetic coinage represented a far more personal and literary approach to sovereignty, reflecting the emperor’s deep patronage of Persian art, poetry, and aesthetics. Experiments with such unconventional coin legends had already begun during Jahangir’s Allahabad rebellion period, but after his accession they evolved into one of the most refined and distinctive series of Mughal numismatics. Different mints and years carried different verses, transforming the coinage into a medium of imperial expression rather than merely currency.<o:p></o:p>The present Ahmadnagar issue corresponds to Poetical Couplet No. 18 recorded by C. J. Brown in the Lucknow Museum series amongst the 48 different poetic couplets attributed to Jahangir, and remains unlisted in KM. The complete mint name appears on the reverse.<o:p></o:p>Amongst the known poetic couplet issues of Jahangir, the present ‘Zeenat’ type stands amongst the rarest, with fewer than five specimens presently recorded. In comparison to the wider couplet series, it appears to be the rarest major type of the group, highly prized not only for its rarity but also for the historical context of the Deccan campaigns and the elegance of its poetic inscription. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Being offered for the first time in our Auction! <o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>
