Note:&nbsp;The Third Anglo–Mysore War (1790–1792), the third of the four Anglo–Mysore Wars, was fought in South India between the Kingdom of Mysore, under Tipu Sultan, and the British East India Company, supported by its allies, including the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The war concluded in March 1792 with the Treaty of Seringapatanam, under which Mysore was compelled to surrender a substantial portion of its territories.<o:p></o:p>The Mysore Medal was authorised in April 1793 by Lord Cornwallis, Governor-General of India, who had commanded the East India Company forces during the campaign. These medals were primarily awarded to native Indian troops serving in the Company’s forces. Gold medals were reserved for senior native officers, including Subedars; larger silver medals were awarded to junior officers such as Jemadars and Serangs, while smaller silver medals were presented to non-commissioned ranks and sepoys, including Havildars, Naiks, Tindals and Lascars. European officers and soldiers, whether serving with the East India Company or the British Army, were not eligible for the award.<o:p></o:p>

Note:&nbsp;These medals were designed by C. H. Küchler and produced at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Manufactory, with some examples subsequently restruck in the 19th century (Christopher Eimer, British Commemorative Medals and their Values, London, 2010, No. 845).<o:p></o:p>The reverse depicts the historic surrender of Tipu Sultan’s sons to Lord Cornwallis following the conclusion of the Third Anglo Mysore War. Under the Treaty of Seringapatam, signed on 26 February 1792, Tipu Sultan was compelled to surrender his two young sons, Princes Abdul Khaliq, aged 10, and Muhi ud din, aged 8, as hostages to guarantee his compliance with the terms of the treaty. The dramatic episode became one of the most celebrated representations associated with the Mysore campaign.<o:p></o:p>Some examples of the medal are incorrectly dated 1793. Note: This Iran Gold Octagonal Medal commemorates the 50th anniversary of Bank Melli (National Bank of Iran) and the Pahlavi Dynasty. Struck in 1976 (MS 2535 / 1355 AH), these medals were issued in various weights and sizes. The present substantial 40 gram specimen was possibly among the highest weight examples, believed to have been reserved for presentation to particularly distinguished guests or VIP delegates.<o:p></o:p>The medal was presented to a doctor of Indian origin from Karnataka, who had been deputed by the Government of India to Iran. A fascinating piece of historical and diplomatic provenance.<o:p></o:p>
