The British troops blew up one city gate and marched into the city in a euphoric mood on 23 July. In taking this fortress, they suffered 200 men killed and wounded, while the Afghans lost nearly 500 men. The battle was the culmination of the British invasion of Afghanistan. The "Ghuznee" medals were only the second British medal that was awarded to all ranks after a campaign, after Waterloo. Due to the large volume, all were issued unengraved, though some recipients later had their medals personalized privately.
