Between 1872 and 1876, India&rsquo;s Viceroy was Lord Northbrook. The important events during his reign were deposition of Gaikwad of Baroda in 1875, visit of Prince of Wales, Famine in Bihar and Kuka Movement in Punjab.

The Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Victoria visited India in 1876 with a large suite. He arrived in Bombay and then travelled to Madras, Ceylon and finally Calcutta. The intent of this visit was to inspire the local princes&rsquo; loyalty to the British Empress and affirm their central role in the maintenance of the empire. Wherever he went, he was showered with valuable gifts by the &ldquo;loyal&rdquo; Indian feudatories. He collected so much in 6 months that one of the ships was filled with the jewels, paintings, antique weapons, live animals, embroideries brocades and all kinds of contemporary art works. He returned and the gifts went on an exhibition in England for 6 months. In return the Prince of Wales gave Indian Princes a copy of Rig-veda translated by Max Muller.

Note: Mughals founded their kingdom in 1526 A.D. but they did not show any active interest in the south for some time. The sultans of Bijapur agreed to pay tribute to Jahangir in 1621 but as they became defaulters, Shahjahan invaded Bijapur in 1636 A.D, and in the concluding treaty it was agreed that Mohammad Adil Shah of Bijapur would pay an annual tribute of twenty lakh rupees to their now established Mughal overlords.

The Adil Shahi kingdom of Bijapur was one of the formidable sultanates of the Deccan and the Mughals could only capture the kingdom at the face of stiff resistance. It was only through the personal ability, determination and, to some extent, the stubbornness of Aurangzeb, who was then the commandeering prince at the head of the Mughal army, that Bijapur capitulated. These initial victories over the Adil Shahis did not mean suzerainty over the region as Ali II Adil Shah aggressively staked his claim to his father&rsquo;s throne while continued incursions by the Nayakas and the Marathas posed grave difficulties to both sultans. Resistance from the Adil Shahis would not cease even after Ali&rsquo;s death and his daughter Shahar Banu Begum&rsquo;s marriage to Aurangzeb&rsquo;s son, Mohammad Azam.

Aurangzeb paid a costly price through these campaigns, as many major expeditions under the best of his generals failed and many of them like Amanullah Khan, Sayyed Fateh Ali Khan Barha, Fateh Mamur Khan, and others were killed. It took 18 months, from March 1685 to September 1686, with three months where the imperial forces came under the personal command of Aurangzeb that the young Sikander Adil Shah finally surrendered Bijapur Fort, thereby effectively bringing an end to the Adil Shahi dynasty. 

As the capital of Adil Shahi kingdom had come under Aurangzeb, the Khutbah was read and gold and silver coins were struck in the name of the Emperor at Bijapur. Later an Imperial Farman to the commanders of its adjoining territories was issued asking them to surrender their forts to imperial officers appointed to this purpose and then come and pay their respects to their new emperor. As no reply of submission would come, the Emperor ordered his generals to take possession of these territories by means of more campaigns. Ishwar Das Nagar writes that by November 1686, Qasim Khan, the Fauzdar of Sira, captured 20 forts that had earlier come under the Bijapur sultanate.

Before 1686 the Mughal Deccan consisted of the four Subahs of Aurangabad (Khujista-Buniyad), Khandesh, Berar, Bidar (Mohammadabad), Bijapur (Dar-uz-Zafar), and Haidarabad (Farkhundah-Buniyad), all erstwhile centers of power under the former Deccan sultans. After the conquest of Bijapur and Golkonda, the extent of the Mughal empire reached up to Trichinopoly (Thirichirapalli) in the far south, in modern-day Tamil Nadu.

The territory of ex-Adil Shahis kingdom was divided into three Subahs, the details are as under:

Bijapur-18 Sarkars, Bidar - 6 Sarkars (except Nanded), Aurangabad (12 Sarkars). The Subah of Bijapur (18 Sarkars) was the second-largest Subah of the Deccan after Haidarabad (43 Sarkars). It was divided into two Subahs namely Bijapur and Bijapur Carnatic (Karnatak) respectively administered from Headquarters of Bijapur Haveli and Sira (in Tumkur District).

Sira was made its headquarters of the sub-Subah of Bijapur called Bijapur Carnatic. The Mughals had established a mint at Sira and the coins minted here were known as Sirahi fanams. Several such coins have now come to light. Coins from this mint contains the legends &quot;Alamgir Badshah&quot; and &ldquo;zarb sira&rdquo; along with the date. It is opined that coins of Aurangzeb which contains the mint name Carnatic (Karnatak) were also minted at Sira as Sira was a prominent mint within the Subah of Bijapur.

Exceedingly Rare Silver One Rupee Coin of Aurangzeb Alamgir of Karnatak Mint.

Shah Alam Bahadur, Toragal / Torgal&nbsp;Mint, Gold Mohur, 4 RY, Obv: sikka shah alam bahadur badshah ghazi, Rev: sana 4 julus, zarb torgal at bottom, 10.90g, 22.5mm, (KM # 356.15),&nbsp;almost uncirculated, Exceedingly Rare.

After 1657 AD. the Mughals began slicing off Bijapur territory one after another. Before the fell of Bijapur in 1686 AD,&nbsp;there were many mints working in Sholapur and the South.

By peaceful means and assurances Prince Muazzam (Shah Alam Bahadur) exercised greater influence over Bijapur government. His opposition to Diler Khan was the main instrument by which peace with Bijapur was established. Bijapur accepted the Mughal suzerainty. In March 1680 AD. at Bijapur the Khutbah was read and the gold and the silver coins were struck in the name of the Emperor Aurangzeb. It was the greatest success of the Mughals at the hands of Prince Shah Alam Bahadur. He succeeded in reducing Bijapur to vassal state, for which his ancestors failed to achieve even by military strategy.

After the fell of Bijapur, in the new Subah of Dar-uz-Zafar Bijapur the Mughals established mints at many places like Bijapur, Ahsanabad (Gulbargah), Azamnagar (Belgaum), Azamnagar Gokulgarh (Gokak), Nusratabad (Sagar), Carnatic Nusratabad (Dharwar), Bankapur, Imtiyazgarh (Adhoni), Ferozgarh (Himmatgarh), Torgal, Chinapatan, Namol (Kamol or Qamar nagar) and Feroznagar (Raichur).

On the deathbed Aurangzeb said to have left his last will under his pillow in which he gave directions for his own burial and for the partition of the Empire among his three sons Shah Alam Bahadur, Azam Shah and Kam Bakhsh.

During this frequent fits of illness of Aurangzeb, Prince Azam Shah planned to remove his rivals (other princes) from his path for securing the Mughal throne for himself. In January 1707 he was sent to remedy the disorders of the Subah of Malwa. In the war of succession, against Shah Alam Bahadur (his elder brother). He died at Jajau, after fighting bravely on 8th June 1707 AD.

The victorious Emperor Shah Alam Bahadur next paid his attention towards Kam Bakhsh, the surviving contender. Before direct encounter Shah Alam Bahadur wrote a kind and admonitory letter to Kam Bakhsh stating, &quot;Our father entrusted you with government of two Subahs of Bijapur and Haidarabad with all their subjects and belongings upon the condition according to the old rule of the Deccan that the coins shall be struck and Khutbah read in our name. The tribute which has hither to been paid by the governors of these two Subahs we remit.&quot;&nbsp;

However, the words of letter fell on deaf ears of Kam Bakhsh, who preferred to fight with only few hundreds of cavalrymen. In the battle fought near Haidarabad, Kam Bakhsh received severe injuries and died on 3rd January 1709 AD. Thus an attempt of Kam Baksh to acquire the throne of Delhi from Bijapur had failed. If he had satisfied with the Subahs of Bijapur and Haidarabad, he would have carved out kingdom of his own. And by this the Bijapur area came under Shah Alam Bahadur and coins were struck from all the nearby mints.

Aurangzeb, Rajapur&nbsp;Mint,&nbsp;Silver Rupee, 3X RY, Obv: &quot;badr munir&quot; couplet, sikka zad dar jahan chu badre munir shah aurangzeb alamgir, Rev: sana julus zarb, complete mint name rajapur visible at bottom, 11.6g, 23.61mm, (Unlisted in KM, See ONS article no 188 pg no 24 by Shailendra Bhandare)&nbsp;about very fine with test marks on bothsides, Exceedingly Rare.&nbsp;

	The harbour of Rajapur had been in prominence in the 17th century. Tavernier, in section 142, chapter 12 of the first volume of his book mentions that many travellers did the journey between Daman and Rajapur on the western coast by sea, because the land route was very bad and fraught with danger. In 1638 the English opened a factory at Rajapur. In 1661, owing to a feud between Chattrapati Shivaji, the pre-eminent Maratha king and the English factors at Rajapur, the former attacked and destroyed the factory at Rajapur. He also took English prisoners and held them captive for a few years. Between Shivaji&#39;s death in 1680 and Aurangzeb&#39;s demise in 1707, three separate instances of Mughal involvement in the region took place. The first happened&#39; soon after Aurangzeb&#39;s move to the Deccan from the north and his arrival at Aurangabad in late 1681. Prince Mu&#39;azzam, his eldest son, had been in charge of Deccan affairs on and off from 1667 till this date. He was asked to launch an attack on the region of `Ram-Darrah (literally &#39;Ram Valley&#39;) situated in Konkan. &#39;Ram Darrah&#39; was in all probability the Rain Ghat pass, an arterial route in the vicinity of Rajapur and Sangameshwar, linking South Konkan with the plains. This attack did not achieve much, so in September 1683, Mu&#39;azzam launched a second campaign that lasted until May 1684. Khali Khan; the Historian of Aurangzeb&#39;s reign and his close confidant, describes it as follows. In 1689, the Maratha, Chhatrapati Sambhaji, was captured at Sangameshwar, north of Rajapur, by sheikh nizam alias Muqarrab khan, a mughal commander, the raid was the last major mughal involvement in this part of Konkan.&nbsp;

	Rupee exist with the mintname of Islambandar and are said to have been sruck at Rajapur by Aurangzeb during his campaign in the Konkan in the late 17th century. Rajapur is said to have been renamed Islambandar during his time.so thus this mint rupees are very Rare.

Chandragupta II (or Vikramaditya, &ldquo;Sun of Valour&rdquo;), was celebrated for extending the empire to Ujjain, but his reign became more associated with cultural and intellectual achievements than with military conquest. Fa-Hein, the Chinese traveler and a Buddhist pilgrim who visited India between 399-411 AD primarily for Buddhist studies has mentioned the superior architecture and political greatness in India during the reign of Chandragupta II.

This coin is the living example of the paramountcy of the classical period during Gupta Empire. Historians mentions that the norms of Indian literature, art, architecture, and philosophy were established in this empire. &nbsp;It shows the King seated in a pose classically described as Rajaleela-Asana. The depiction is realistic and executed in a supple style so typical of sculptures of the Gupta period. 

The couch type was obviously suggested by the Lyrist type of Samudragupta. On both the coins of these rulers we see the king seated on a high-backed couch, Samudragupta was shown playing lute whereas this coin does not show Chandragupta II playing any musical instrument so he was probably not a musician like his father. The transition can be seen from one ruler type to another clearly. Altekar assumed that this variety was issued as special coronation issue. Allan suggested that these were struck for a special purpose and it may be attributed to Pataliputra. 

The obverse legends in Brahmi are &ldquo;Deva Sri Maharajadhiraja Sri Chandraguptasya&rdquo; &ldquo;देव श्री महाराजाधिराज श्री चंद्रगुप्तस्य&rdquo; and the reverse legends in Brahmi are &ldquo;Sri Vikramah&rdquo; &ldquo;श्री विक्रम:&rdquo;.

Altekar mentions one piece each in the collection of the British Museum, Lucknow Museum, Indian Museum (Calcutta) and the Prince of Wales Museum (Bombay). The Bayana hoard had three specimens reported in it. Allan mentions only 2 specimen known of this type. Kumar has mentioned total 8 pieces of this variety which is classified in 2 groups and further classified on the variations of legends in the obverse and reverse. There are totally 5 variations reported by Kumar amongst the 8 recorded pieces till date and he classifies them into two different rulers. The obverse variation is with the extra word &ldquo;Rupakriti&rdquo;. The reverse variations are goddess holding diadem and empty handed in her left hand, another variation of the legends Sri Vikramah on right and left. On the basis of the title &ldquo;Sri Vikramah&rdquo; readable at reverse on this specimen which is seen on the coinage of Chandragupta II, we also attribute this to Chandragupta II same like Allan and Altekar.

This scarcity may be attributed to historical circumstances or the mint's short operational period during Humayun's reign.
