Note: During the later years of Akbar’s reign, Sulayman Mirza of Badakhshan emerged once more as a destabilizing Timurid claimant, seeking to revive his fortunes through control of Kabul, the symbolic and strategic heart of the Mughal north-west. Advancing from Badakhshan, Sulayman Mirza entered Kabul during his final expedition and briefly established authority there before being decisively checked by Mughal forces. Although the campaign failed to secure lasting control, it represented his last serious attempt to assert a dynastic claim within the Timurid succession framework.

The shahrukhi offered here belongs to this moment of transition. Originally struck at Kabul in the name of Sulayman Mirza during his occupation of the city, it was later countermarked “Adl e Akbar” dated 983 Hijri (1575–76 AD) under Akbar. The countermark marks the formal reassertion of Mughal justice and sovereignty over Kabul, transforming a coin of contested Timurid ambition into a clear statement of imperial consolidation under Akbar.
