During the 1857 Mutiny, both the Gwalior contingent and Bharatpur troops supported the British in suppressing the uprising. The date on this coin, 1858 AD, is historically significant—it marks the year following the Sepoy Mutiny. Bharatpur was among the earliest princely states to pledge loyalty to the British and is believed to be one of the first to issue a coin featuring Queen Victoria’s portrait. Notably, 1858 also saw the Royal Proclamation on November 1st, which officially transferred power from the East India Company to the British Crown.
