Note: The Clement Town Prisoner-of-War Camp, located near Dehradun, was one of the principal internment centres established by the British Indian Government during the Second World War. The camp complex is known to have housed Axis prisoners of war, including a substantial number of Italian internees, along with German prisoners accommodated within the broader Dehradun internment system.

The Clement Town group comprised Camps 21 to 24, which were organized into different wings reportedly designated for pro-Nazi, anti-Nazi, and Italian prisoners, while one section functioned as the Central Internment Camp. To regulate transactions within the camp and restrict the circulation of regular currency, specially printed Prisoner-of-War coupons were issued for use within camp canteens and authorized facilities. These coupons form an important part of wartime currency usage and numismatics, reflecting the unique monetary systems employed within POW camps across British India. Of particular interest, the present coupon bears a centrally overprinted numeral “23”, possibly denoting a specific camp or compound number within the Clement Town complex. Today, Clement Town POW coupons are highly sought after by collectors of military, emergency, and wartime currency owing to their historical significance and limited survival.
