Note: Dariya Khan emerged as one of the most powerful nobles of the Gujarat Sultanate in the turbulent period following the death of Bahadur Shah in 1536. He played a decisive role in placing the young Mahmud Shah III (Mahmud bin Latif) on the throne and effectively controlled the administration for several years, acting as the de facto ruler. His dominance over the court and the Sultan created resentment among other powerful nobles, particularly Imad ul-Mulk and Alam Khan Lodi, who eventually conspired to free the Sultan from his influence. After losing control over Mahmud III, Dariya Khan reacted by setting up a rival claimant, reportedly installing another boy as Sultan and issuing coins in his name to assert his authority. This marked a brief but significant phase of political fragmentation within Gujarat. Although he initially achieved military success against opposing factions, his position weakened due to lack of broader support, forcing him to retreat to strongholds such as Dholka and Champaner. His career reflects the intense factional struggles of the period, where powerful nobles could challenge royal authority and even attempt to create alternative center of sovereignty.
