This brief first reign lasted only <strong data-start="275" data-end="287">two days</strong>, ending on <strong data-start="299" data-end="336">6 Safar AH 1203 (17 October 1788)</strong>, and belongs to one of the most turbulent episodes of late Mughal history. Whilst the Mughal throne had once commanded an empire stretching across much of the Indian subcontinent, by the closing decades of the eighteenth-century princes of the Timurid house had increasingly become instruments in the struggle between competing military and political factions.</span></p><p data-start="699" data-end="1369"><span style="font-family:'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size:14px;">Despite enduring for scarcely <strong data-start="729" data-end="750">forty-eight hours</strong>, the first reign of Muhammad Akbar fulfilled the <strong data-start="800" data-end="866">two principal requirements of sovereignty in the Islamic world</strong>: the <strong data-start="872" data-end="882">Khutba</strong> (Friday sermon and formal recognition of sovereignty) was read in his name and the <strong data-start="966" data-end="975">Sikka</strong> was struck. The present coin provides important evidence of the continued significance of these institutions during the final decades of the Mughal Empire. That coinage was produced not only at <strong data-start="1170" data-end="1187">Shahjahanabad</strong> but also at distant provincial mints such as <strong data-start="1233" data-end="1244">Hardwar</strong> demonstrates the speed with which imperial authority could still be proclaimed and recognised through the medium of coinage.</span></p><p data-start="1371" data-end="2383" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family:'Times New Roman', Times, serif;font-size:14px;">Coins in the name of Muhammad Akbar are known from <strong data-start="1422" data-end="1474">Shahjahanabad, Ahmedabad, Hardwar and Saharanpur</strong>. The present specimen belongs to the <strong data-start="1512" data-end="1540">rare Sri Hardwar variety</strong>, distinguished by the addition of the honorific <strong data-start="1589" data-end="1596">Sri</strong> before the mint-name. The appearance of this epithet is particularly noteworthy, reflecting the <strong data-start="1693" data-end="1728">religious importance of Hardwar</strong>, one of the most revered pilgrimage centres in northern India. Equally remarkable is the fact that coinage in the name of Muhammad Akbar was struck at Hardwar at all. Situated far from the imperial capital, the mint nevertheless responded to the brief change in sovereignty, providing striking evidence for the continued importance of the <strong data-start="2068" data-end="2088">Khutba and Sikka</strong> as instruments through which imperial authority was proclaimed and recognised during the final decades of the Mughal Empire. <strong data-start="2214" data-end="2278">Exceptionally rare and of considerable historical importance</strong>, the present issue would form a significant addition to any advanced collection of later Mughal coinage.</span></p></div></div></div></div><div class="z-0 flex min-h-[46px] justify-start">&nbsp;</div></div></div></section></div></div><div class="pointer-events-none -mt-px h-px translate-y-[calc(var(--scroll-root-safe-area-inset-bottom)-14*var(--spacing))]" aria-hidden="true">&nbsp;</div><div class="pointer-events-none translate-y-(--scroll-root-safe-area-inset-bottom) R6Vx5W_threadScrollVars min-h-(--gutter-remaining-height,0px) group-data-stream-active/scroll-root:h-[calc(var(--thread-response-height)-16*var(--spacing))]">&nbsp;</div></div></div><div class="sticky bottom-0 z-10 group/thread-bottom-container relative isolate w-full basis-auto has-data-has-thread-error:pt-2 has-data-has-thread-error:[box-shadow:var(--sharp-edge-bottom-shadow)] md:border-transparent md:pt-0 dark:border-white/20 md:dark:border-transparent print:hidden content-fade single-line flex flex-col" id="thread-bottom-container"><div class="relative mx-auto h-0"><div class="flex h-0 items-end justify-center motion-safe:transition-all motion-safe:delay-300 motion-safe:duration-300 group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:scale-50 group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:translate-y-2 group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:opacity-0 group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:pointer-events-none group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:duration-100 group-[:not([data-scroll-from-end])]/scroll-root:delay-0 absolute start-1/2 z-10 -translate-x-1/2 bottom-[calc(100%+3*var(--spacing)+var(--thread-scroll-to-bottom-banner-offset,0px))]">&nbsp;</div></div><div id="thread-bottom"><div><div class="text-base mx-auto [--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-xs,calc(var(--spacing)*4))] @w-sm/main:[--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-sm,calc(var(--spacing)*6))] @w-lg/main:[--thread-content-margin:var(--thread-content-margin-lg,calc(var(--spacing)*16))] px-(--thread-content-margin)"><div><div class="[--thread-content-max-width:40rem] @w-lg/main:[--thread-content-max-width:48rem] mx-auto max-w-(--thread-content-max-width) flex-1 mb-[var(--thread-component-gap,1rem)]"><div class="w-full"><div class="pointer-events-auto relative z-1 flex h-(--composer-container-height,100%) max-w-full flex-(--composer-container-flex,1) flex-col"><div class="absolute start-0 end-0 bottom-full z-20"><div class="relative h-full w-full"><div class="mb-2 flex flex-col gap-3.5 pt-2"><aside class="flex w-full items-start gap-4 rounded-3xl border py-4 ps-5 pe-3 text-sm [text-wrap:pretty] lg:mx-auto dark:border-transparent shadow-xxs md:items-center border-token-border-default bg-token-main-surface-primary text-token-text-primary dark:bg-token-main-surface-secondary"><div class="flex h-full w-full gap-3 md:items-center"><div class="flex grow flex-col md:flex-row md:items-center md:justify-between md:gap-8"><div class="flex flex-col"><div class="">&nbsp;</div></div></div></div></aside></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p></div>
