Note: The award is usually known as the Zanzibar War Medal (1896) or Sultan of Zanzibar’s Medal. It was instituted by Sultan Hamoud bin Mohammed following the Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896. The medal was awarded to British naval and military personnel, as well as Zanzibari forces, who took part in that conflict-the shortest war in recorded history.
