Late Mughal zodiac rupees from the Orchha Nagar mint are known with similar obverse legends, and the calligraphy closely resembles rupees struck at Jhansi (Balwantnagar) under Awadh administration.<o:p></o:p>By Ry. 6 of Shah Alam II (1764–65), Jhansi came under Maratha control, and Maratha issues from Balwantnagar show a distinct change in style. Coins from the Orchha Nagar mint are otherwise only known for the single date combination AH 1177 / Ry. 6.<o:p></o:p>It is likely that mint craftsmen from Awadh moved to Orchha after the Marathas took Jhansi, producing this short-lived issue.
