After 1657 AD, the Mughals began systematically encroaching upon Bijapur territory. Even before Bijapur’s final fall in 1686 AD, mints were operating across Sholapur, the Deccan, and the southern regions, reflecting expanding Mughal authority. This advance was achieved largely through diplomacy under Prince Muʿazzam (later Shah Alam Bahadur), whose opposition to Diler Khan enabled a negotiated settlement with Bijapur. As a result, Bijapur accepted Mughal suzerainty, and in March 1680 AD the khutbah was read at Bijapur and gold and silver coins were struck in the name of Emperor Aurangzeb. This marked one of the Mughals’ greatest diplomatic successes, accomplishing what earlier emperors had failed to achieve through prolonged military campaigns.Following Bijapur’s conquest in 1686 AD, the territory was reorganized as the Subah of Dār-uz-Zafar Bijapur. The region was fully absorbed into the Mughal administrative and monetary framework, with extensive mint activity supporting imperial revenue collection and military logistics throughout the Deccan and adjoining southern tracts.During Aurangzeb’s final illness, Prince Azam Shah moved to secure the succession and was dispatched to Malwa in January 1707 AD. In the ensuing war of succession, he confronted his elder brother Shah Alam Bahadur and was killed at Jajau on 8 June 1707 AD. Aurangzeb is said to have left instructions for his burial and for the division of authority among Shah Alam Bahadur, Azam Shah, and Kam Bakhsh. After his accession, Shah Alam Bahadur sought to resolve the final challenge posed by Kam Bakhsh through negotiation rather than force, reminding him that Aurangzeb had entrusted him with Bijapur and Haidarabad on the condition that the khutbah be read and coins struck in Shah Alam’s name, while also remitting the customary tribute. Kam Bakhsh rejected these overtures and chose armed resistance with only a small cavalry force. He was decisively defeated near Haidarabad, fatally wounded, and died on 3 January 1709 AD. With his death ended the last serious attempt to challenge the Mughal throne from the Deccan, and Bijapur thereafter remained firmly under Shah Alam Bahadur, with coinage continuing uninterrupted from the regional Mughal mints. This specimen was likely struck right after the concluding battle between Shah Alam Bahadur and Kam Bakhsh, making this mohur evident of the ascension struggles in the Deccan after the death of Aurangzeb.<o:p></o:p>
