Note: In AH 990 (AD 1582), Emperor Akbar articulated the doctrine of Din-i-Ilahi, a private ethical and spiritual order drawing selectively from multiple traditions and centred upon the emperor himself. Mintless and dateless coins failed to gain currency, as they removed the essential markers through which Mughal coinage conveyed authority, enabled regulation, and ensured fiscal accountability. Deprived of clear origin and chronology, such issues generated uncertainty rather than confidence and could not function as a durable medium of exchange within the imperial system.<o:p></o:p>The heavy gold mohur countermarked “30” offered here belongs to the decisive corrective phase that followed. In AH 992 (AD 1584), the administration instituted the Ilahi era, a solar-based regnal calendar retrospectively dated from the beginning of Akbar’s reign. The Ilahi system commenced at the Vernal Equinox (Nowruz) and consisted of twelve Persian months, devised by the polymath Fathullah Shirazi, one of the most influential intellectual figures at Akbar’s court. The applied countermark of Ilahi year 30 records an immediate administrative intervention, transforming an experimental issue into a stabilised and authoritative monetary instrument.<o:p></o:p>Exceptionally rare, both as a type and in this state of preservation, the present example is further distinguished by its sharp strike, bold legends, and beautifully preserved surfaces. Ilahi-period mohurs of this quality are seldom encountered. Long regarded as among the most beautiful and historically significant coins of the Mughal Empire, this piece stands as a tangible record of one of Akbar’s most ambitious ideological and monetary reforms.<o:p></o:p>
