Note: The&nbsp;Kanva Dynasty (c. 75–30 BCE)&nbsp;succeeded the&nbsp;Shunga Dynasty&nbsp;and ruled parts of&nbsp;Magadha and Central India, including&nbsp;Vidisha. The dynasty was founded by&nbsp;Vasudeva Kanva, a Brahmin minister who, as recorded in&nbsp;The Age of Imperial Unity&nbsp;(Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan),&nbsp;usurped the throne after having his royal master Devabhuti killed by a slave-girl. Vasudeva then established a new ruling line known as the&nbsp;Kanva or Kanyayana dynasty, named after his&nbsp;gotra&nbsp;(family lineage).<o:p></o:p>The Kanva line consisted of&nbsp;four rulers:&nbsp;Vasudeva (9 years),&nbsp;Bhumimitra (14 years),&nbsp;Narayana (12 years), and&nbsp;Susharman (10 years)&nbsp;— who ruled for about&nbsp;45 years in total. Their reign extended from around&nbsp;75 BCE to 30 BCE, according to the chronology presented in the&nbsp;Puranas&nbsp;and interpreted by scholars such as&nbsp;H.C. Raychaudhuri,&nbsp;R.C. Majumdar, and&nbsp;Upinder Singh.<o:p></o:p>The&nbsp;Puranas&nbsp;mention that the Kanva kings “kept their neighboring rulers under subjection and ruled righteously,” though little concrete history survives about their administration. Their rule was eventually brought to an end by the&nbsp;Andhrabhrityas (Satavahanas), who rose to power in the Deccan and absorbed the remaining territories of the Kanvas and the declining Shungas.<o:p></o:p>Notably, the eminent historian&nbsp;Sir R.G. Bhandarkar&nbsp;proposed that the Kanvas initially acted as&nbsp;de facto&nbsp;rulers under the Shungas — much like the Peshwas under the later Marathas — before finally overthrowing them. However, this theory has not gained full acceptance, as the&nbsp;Puranas&nbsp;clearly state that&nbsp;the first Kanva king killed the last Shunga ruler, marking a definitive dynastic change.<o:p></o:p>Coins attributed to the Kanvas have been found in&nbsp;Vidisha,&nbsp;Kaushambi, and&nbsp;Central Malwa, supporting the belief that&nbsp;Vidisha served as their capital or major minting center. These coins are typically in&nbsp;copper or potin, with symbols such as the&nbsp;Indradhvaja (railing standard),&nbsp;Nandipada (taurine symbol), and&nbsp;Ujjain symbol, reflecting continuity from Shunga designs. The present&nbsp;potin unit, with its distinctive&nbsp;Indradhvaja and Nandipada motif, perfectly aligns with the typology of authenticated Kanva issues. Although this specimen lacks an inscription, its&nbsp;fabric, style, and iconography&nbsp;unmistakably place it within the&nbsp;Kanva series of Central Malwa.<o:p></o:p>Offered for the first time in any auction, this coin stands as a&nbsp;major discovery&nbsp;for Kanva dynasty and the study of India’s late pre-Satavahana coinage.&nbsp;
