Note: The recent studies and research by Jan Lingen suggests that this rupee was issued by the Marathas following their successful occupation of Old Delhi on 28 September 1788, when, allied with Begum Samru and Ismail Beg—who had shifted allegiance to their side—they launched a decisive offensive that forced Ghulam Qadir and the Rohilla forces to abandon the Red Fort by 10 October. This marked the fifth and final time the Marathas secured Delhi, maintaining control until the British East India Company captured the city on 11 September 1803, ending the Maratha dominance in Upper Hindustan. Though often mistaken for a British issue, this coin is a true Maratha emission, reflecting their brief but significant authority over the Mughal capital during this transitional period.
