Gond kingdom of Garha Mandla, Madhukar Shah, Copper Square Paisa, VS 1664, Obv: a lion facing right within a square frame, with Devanagari legend गढागढ above, 'Zarb Garha garh' inscribed in crude Farsi, VS date 1664 is engraved retrograded at the bottom, Rev: Devanagari legend "Sri Krishna Shri Madhuka /ra Sahi”, 9.73g, 17.45 x 17.35mm, (Unlisted in KM), about very fine, Extremely Rare.

Note: The Gond kingdom fell to Akbar in 1564 following a valiant battle at Chauragarh, where the legendary Rani Durgavati sacrificed her life. Akbar later installed Chand Shah as a vassal ruler of Garha, but he was soon murdered by his younger brother, Madhukar Shah, who seized the throne. The date on this coin closely aligns with Akbar’s death, suggesting that Madhukar Shah may have briefly asserted independence by issuing coins in his own name. These coins are of exceptional rarity, with fewer than five known specimens—possibly being offered here for the very first time in any auction.
