Note: Athsho, or Athosho, is believed to originate from the Zoroastrian deity 'Atar,' the revered son of Ahura Mazda and the embodiment of holy fire, as symbolized by the flames around his head and shoulders. Closely aligned with Aša-Vahišta—the essence of truth and righteousness, who appears as Ashaeixsho on Huvishka’s coinage—Atar was often celebrated in royal fires across ancient traditions. Although Athsho was regarded in Iran as the deity who judged souls in heaven, he shared symbolic ties with Hephaistos in Western Mithraism. The blacksmith’s hammer and tongs, tools associated with Hephaistos, were traditionally used in lighting the holy fire and thus became sacred symbols of Athsho as well. This connection is further supported by Pahlavi commentary on the Atašnyayiš (Sacred Books of the East XXIII:360, note 6), which describes Athsho as “bodily infirm, yet spiritually a warrior,” echoing attributes of both deities.
