The blacksmith’s hammer and tongs, tools associated with Hephaistos, were traditionally used in lighting the holy fire and thus became sacred symbols of Athsho as well. This connection is further supported by Pahlavi commentary on the Atašnyayiš (Sacred Books of the East XXIII:360, note 6), which describes Athsho as “bodily infirm, yet spiritually a warrior,” echoing attributes of both deities.
