This exceptional coin showcases unparalleled quality, featuring a complete dotted and linear border visible on both sides. It boasts a superb original patina, struck in high relief, with a centrally and sharply struck design. The flawless quality, crisp letters, and Gem UNC condition make this piece truly outstanding. With only approximately five known specimens, these coins stand out due to their lack of denomination and mint mark, unlike Tipu's other silver issues. Initially thought to be trial strikes, the presence of die variations suggests a different purpose. It is plausible that these coins were struck for a special purpose, possibly for ceremonial use such as the 'Nisar' court ritual. The year 1787, when these coins were produced, was significant in Tipu's reign, marked by the conclusion of a war with the Marathas and diplomatic engagements with the Ottoman Sultan. A Darbar held during this period may have necessitated the issuance of ceremonial coins, with quarter rupees being a common and suitable denomination for such occasions. The stylistic resemblance between these coins and others from the region, like the Double Rupees of Calicut, suggests broader numismatic connections. The presence of a comparable coin in the Ashmolean Museum further underscores the rarity and importance of this unique piece in understanding Tipu Sultan's coinage. This coin not only reflects a significant historical period but also adds a fascinating chapter to the study of Islamic and Indian numismatics.
