Note: A separate ‘Kangha’ symbol is placed between the Persian Letter‘Guru and Bind of Gobind’ in reverse. Persian word Akal is noted on the other side.

Ranjit Singh took control of Amritsar in AD 1805 (VS1862). It is believed by historians that he commemorated this victory by introducing the religious symbol of 'Kangha' (Comb)on his coin. It is a part of the five ‘Ks’ or essentials in the Sikh Religion prescribed by Guru Gobind Singh, the creator of the Khalsa. It became a customary practice for Lahore Durbar to send the donation of the first minted coins of any new series to Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar.
