In the Travancore state, the gold Thulabhara Kaasu coins symbolize the Thulapurusha Danam ceremony, reflecting the rich numismatic heritage of Travancore. Originally, these coins were crafted from gold equivalent to the Maharaja's weight and were distributed to Brahmins during the donation ceremony. Named Thulabhara Kaasu, these coins were not initially part of the state's currency. The gold dedicated for this purpose underwent purification, resulting in coins of various sizes and weights. One side of the coin featured the inscription representing the family deity of the Travancore house.

Until 1850, Thulabharam coins were uniface, bearing the letters 'Sree Padmanabha' in Malayalam. However, a significant transformation occurred in 1870 during Ayilyam Thirunal's Thulabaram ceremony. New coins were introduced with a different design, which were struck on both sides. The obverse showcased the letters encircled by a wreath, while the reverse displayed a conch surrounded by another wreath.

The Thulabharam Kaasu coins were issued in four denominations, namely Kazhanju, ½ Kazhanju, ¼ Kazhanju, and 1/8 Kazhanju. The Kazhanju, being the largest denomination, weighed approximately 5 grams.
