The Panchala Mahajanapada was one of the great ancient kingdoms of India, flourishing before the Magadhan and Mauryan empires. After the Mauryan decline, Panchala regained its independence under local rulers, as attested by their abundant coinage. These coins are typically found in northern Panchala, while southern Panchala had its capital at Kampilya (modern Farrukhabad). Nearly forty rulers are known from their coins, belonging to different family branches such as -ghosha, -gupta, -mitra, -nandi, -pala, and -sena.

The Pabhosa inscription (1st century BCE) mentions Ashadhasena, grandfather of Vangapala, who overstruck the coins of Damagupta-showing dynastic continuity and evolution of coinage. Under the Kushanas, Panchala briefly came under imperial control before later rulers such as Shivanandashri and Sri Nandi reasserted autonomy.
