Full Description: Gupta Dynasty, Kumaragupta I (Mahendraditya), Gold Dinar, Horseman - Left Type. Obv: king without nimbus riding horse to right, bare headed wearing necklace, armlets & waist-band some-times flying behind, carrying no weapons, circular brahmi legend "PritivitalambarasasiKumaraguptojayatyajitah", the first two letters of the legend are between the head of the king & the horse, Rev: goddess lakshmi seated left on a wicker stool holding lotus with a long stalk with leaves & buds in the right hand, left hand resting on waist, brahmilegend"ajitamahendra"in the right field, 7.82g, 17.05mm, (Altekar, Bayana # Pl. XXII-1), about extremely fine+, Extremely Rare. Important specimen, this type of the reverse where Goddess is seen holding the lotus is offered first time in any auction sale. Superb bold strikes where the jewelleries worn by the Goddess are clearly visible, exceptional reverse with partial dotted borders also. This rarity is missing from various Gupta coin collections and is of high importance. |
