The legend 'Kadakanam' on coins is a Prakrit rendering of the word 'Kshudrakanam,' which is mentioned several times in the Mahabharata. The first literary reference to Kshudrakas appears in Panini’s work, noting a Kshudraka-Malava sena alliance. Shri R.G. Bhandarkar identified Kshudrakas with the Oxydrakai mentioned by Greek historians. According to Megasthenes, the Kshudrakas were among the most powerful tribes encountered by Alexander on the banks of the Indus in the 4th century BC (Ref: Tribal Coins of Ancient India, Handa, Devendra: 2007).
