Note: The present Gold Mohur of Urdu Zafar Qarin, bearing the date Alf (“one thousand”), belongs to one of the more unusual episodes in Akbar’s coinage. Although conventionally read as AH 1000, the Alf dating system was actually introduced by Akbar in AH 990 (1582 CE), a full decade before the Hijri millennium. Contemporary chronicler ‘Abd al-Qadir Badauni records that Akbar considered the thousand years of Islam from the beginning of the Prophet’s mission rather than from the Hijra, and accordingly ordered Alf to appear upon the imperial coinage while also commissioning the Tarikh-i-Alfi, or “History of the Millennium.” The designation Urdu Zafar Qarin, “Camp associated with Victory,” further places the coin within Akbar’s distinctive imperial camp coinage. Thus, rather than merely recording a year, the Alf upon this mohur reflects a deliberate change in Akbar’s conception of time and kingship, making these gold issues an important numismatic record of the ideological changes taking place at his court during the later part of his reign.
