Note: Badakhshan was an important Timurid frontier region between Kabul, Transoxiana and Kashghar, centred in Babur’s time around Qila-i-Zafar. Its strategic location and close association with the Timurid house made it particularly significant to the early Mughals. During Babur’s early years, Badakhshān passed between Sultan Mahmud Miran Shahi, Khusrau Shah, the Uzbeks and Nasir Mirza, before Babur entrusted it to Mirza Owais Khan. After his death in AH 927, it was given to Humayun, who governed it before joining Babur’s invasion of Hindustan. The region remained closely tied to the Mughal dynasty under Humayun and Akbar. Badakhshān continued to hold dynastic and strategic importance for the Mughals, but their attempts to retain influence beyond the Hindu Kush ultimately failed. During Shah Jahan’s reign, Mughal control over Badakhshān was finally lost. Badakhshan was therefore not merely a distant mint, but a territory closely connected with the origins of the Mughal dynasty. The present coin may consequently represent one of the earliest, perhaps the earliest, “Mughal” specimens struck at Badakhshan.
