Note: Tatta was one of the most important Mughal mints of the lower Indus. The region was brought under Mughal authority during Akbar’s reign after Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan defeated the Tarkhan ruler Mirza Jani Beg in 1591–92. Its importance was both strategic and commercial: Tatta stood at the centre of the trade of lower Sindh and was connected through Lahari Bandar with the Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf and wider Indian Ocean trade. The port was considered sufficiently important for Akbar to place it under direct imperial administration. Tatta consequently developed into a significant provincial and monetary centre, remaining an active Mughal mint for well over a century. Numismatically, it was particularly distinctive under Shah Jahan I, continuing to strike rupees bearing Ilahi months and regnal years long after most other imperial mints had abandoned the practice.By the time Shah Jahan II (Rafi-ud-Daulah) ascended the throne in AH 1131 / 1719 AD, however, the Mughal court had entered one of its most turbulent periods. He was placed on the throne by the powerful Sayyid Brothers immediately after the brief reign of his brother Rafi-ud-Darajat and assumed the title Shah Jahan II in June 1719. His own reign lasted barely three months before his death in September. For a distant mint such as Tatta, this left only a remarkably narrow period in which news of the accession could reach Sindh, new dies could be prepared and coins struck in the new emperor’s name. Rupees of Shah Jahan II from Tatta are consequently exceptionally rare, surviving as brief numismatic witnesses to one of the shortest and most unsettled reigns of the later Mughal period.
