Aurangzeb Alamgir <span style="line-height:115%;mso-ansi-language:EN-GB;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:Mangal;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;">(AH 1068-1118 /1658-1707 AD), Mint off flan, Silver 1/16 Rupee Nisar (Anna), "Badr Munir" Couplet,&nbsp;Obv: Persian legend: “(Sikka zad dar jahan chu) badr munir, Shah Aurangzeb Alamgir”,&nbsp;Rev: Persian legend “sana julus" &amp; mint name off flan at the bottom, 0.65g, 10.90mm, (Unlisted in KM), no test mark, nice patina, sharp strike, XF-AU, Very Rare.

Note: Although the present coin does not bear the word Nisar, its very low denomination strongly suggests that it was intended for the same ceremonial purpose. The practice of nisar, or scattering money as imperial largesse, was formalised numismatically under Jahangir, who designated the quarter-rupee as the Nisari. Jahangir himself records several instances of money being scattered during imperial appearances and processions, and the practice continued under Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb and later Mughal emperors. &nbsp;Nisar coinage was used both as imperial largesse and to ward off the ill effects of the “evil eye” by diverting the gaze of onlookers while the emperor appeared at court or during processions. Very low denominations were particularly suited to this purpose, as larger quantities could be dispersed during a ceremony. Aurangzeb’s Nisar issues are relatively scarce, while examples in very small denominations are rarer still. The present specimen is therefore an important survival of this Mughal ceremonial tradition.
