Note: Top Pop, highest graded specimen known for the type. Jahangir introduced his celebrated Zodiac coinage in Ahmadabad during the opening months of his 13th regnal year, AH 1027 (April 1618 AD), while the imperial camp was moving through Gujarat towards Ahmadabad. In the Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri, he records that instead of inscribing the name of the month upon his coins, he ordered the corresponding constellation to be depicted, with the sun appearing to emerge from behind it, an innovation which he expressly described as his own. Thus Farwardin was represented by Aries, Ardibihisht by Taurus, followed by Gemini for Khurdad, Cancer for Tir and Leo for Amardad. &nbsp;The silver Zodiac series of Ahmadabad is particularly important, as the regular sequence known from the mint is confined to these first five signs, almost entirely dated AH 1027 / RY 13; no corresponding Virgo issue from Ahmadabad has been securely recorded. The present Taurus Rupee, representing the Ilahi month of Ardibihisht, therefore belongs to the earliest phase of Jahangir's experiment with zodiacal coinage and to the short-lived silver series struck during his stay in Gujarat. Preserved without a test mark, centrally struck and presently the highest graded example of the type at NGC, it represents an exceptional specimen of one of the most distinctive issues of Mughal coinage.<o:p></o:p>
