Note: This specimen bears the mint-name Surat, rendered in Persian with the letters Swad and Waw. The month is distinctly inscribed as “Jan” (meaning spirit, life, soul, energy, or courage), although no such month exists within the Ilahi calendar.&nbsp; In the Punjab Museum Catalogue (1914), this type coin is described under No. 355 as a square Ilahi Rupee of Regnal Year 38, noted as the only known specimen of Akbar carrying this mint-name. However, due to the unconventional spelling of both the mint-name and the month-then presumed to represent Aban-the attribution to Surat was considered uncertain. &nbsp;Subsequently, the reading of the mint as Surat was convincingly established by S.H. Hodivala. Following the PMC attribution, most published specimens continued to assign the month as Aban. It is now generally accepted that this interpretation is incorrect, and that the inscription “Jan” Ilahi should instead correspond to the month Mihr.An earlier interpretation proposed by the present writer-that Zarb Surat 38 Jan Ilahi may be translated as “Struck at Surat in the 38th year of the Divine Spirit”-remains a plausible reading; nevertheless, the attribution to the month Mihr is now preferred.
