Note: This remarkable lead coin of the Hiranyakas of Central Karnataka (c. 200–350 AD) ranks among the most extraordinary specimens of early Indian coinage that we have encountered. Struck on an unusually broad flan and perfectly centred, it displays exceptional precision, with the complete Brahmi legends clearly visible around the periphery. The obverse horse motif is rendered in stunning detail, with features so sharp and distinct that they can be fully appreciated with the naked eye. Equally impressive is the reverse, where the iconic ten-arched hill, railing tree, and river populated with fishes are preserved with remarkable clarity and artistic definition.What elevates this specimen to an altogether different level is its astonishing state of preservation. The coin retains its original earthen deposits and natural patina, complemented by an attractive sheen and glaze developed over centuries of undisturbed survival. Such preservation is virtually unheard of for lead coinage, a metal particularly susceptible to environmental deterioration. The exceptional strike quality, meticulous centring, and overall fabric of the piece suggest the possibility that it may have been produced for a special or presentation purpose.An extraordinary masterpiece and an epitome of beauty in early Indian numismatics, this is a coin of museum-worthy calibre. We have never previously offered a Hiranyaka lead issue of comparable quality, preservation, and visual appeal.
