Note: It is difficult to find coins bearing the complete name of Muhammad Ibrahim, the Mughal claimant ruler, as most surviving issues are struck with partial legends. Fully inscribed specimens are consequently rare. Muhammad Ibrahim was a grandson of Bahadur Shah I through Prince Rafi-us-Shan and emerged as a claimant to the Mughal throne during the political turmoil that followed the deposition of Farrukhsiyar. In AH 1133 (1720 AD), amidst the continuing struggle between the Sayyid Brothers and their opponents, he was proclaimed emperor by a faction of the Mughal nobility seeking to challenge the authority of Muhammad Shah and restore its influence at the imperial court.His claim to the throne lasted only thirty days, between 15 October and 13 November 1720. Following the defeat of his supporters at Hasanpur by forces loyal to Muhammad Shah, Muhammad Ibrahim was deposed and subsequently imprisoned. His brief reign reflects the changing fortunes of the Mughal Empire itself. Little more than a decade after the death of Aurangzeb, the throne of the Great Mughal had increasingly become the prize of competing noble factions, whilst princes of the Timurid lineage were elevated and discarded according to the shifting balance of power at court. Coinage struck in Muhammad Ibrahim's name survives as a contemporary record of this remarkable transformation in the nature of Mughal authority.The present specimen, struck at Shahjahanabad and bearing the celebrated Ba Fazl-e-Karim ("By the Grace of the Beneficent") couplet, was issued during the brief thirty-day reign of Muhammad Ibrahim. Produced at the imperial capital itself, it serves as a contemporary record of a period when rival factions of the Mughal nobility competed for control of the empire through competing imperial claimants. Well centred and displaying the emperor's full name with unusual clarity, the coin possesses considerable visual appeal for the type. Its pleasing fabric and overall quality make it a particularly desirable example of a ruler whose coinage was struck for only a matter of weeks.
