Note: This exceptional commemorative rupee, steeped in history and imperial grandeur, was struck at Ajmer during the period when the city had effectively become the de facto capital of the Mughal Empire under Jahangir. The issue is believed to commemorate the Mughal victories in the Deccan campaigns of the early AH 1020s (1610s AD), a critical phase in the empire’s southern expansion when the forces of Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, and Golconda repeatedly attempted to resist Mughal supremacy in the region. These campaigns, led in large part through Prince Khurram under the direct supervision of Jahangir, marked the emergence of the future Shah Jahan as the foremost military commander of the Empire.<o:p></o:p>The coin bears the celebrated Persian inscription:<o:p></o:p>Zad sikkah bar zar fatah dar Ajmer<o:p></o:p>Shah Jahangir Shahanshah Akbar. (“At Ajmer was struck upon gold, the coin of victory, by King Jahangir, King of Kings, son of King Akbar.”)&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>The wording itself is deeply symbolic. Rather than employing a conventional imperial formula, the coin explicitly declares itself a “coin of victory,” transforming the issue into a direct statement of Mughal military triumph and dynastic legitimacy. Struck from Ajmer, the imperial camp from which Jahangir oversaw both Rajputana and Deccan affairs, the rupee stands as a political proclamation of Mughal authority&nbsp;at the height of Jahangir’s reign.<o:p></o:p>Artistically, the type represents the refined maturity of Jahangir’s numismatic vision. His reign witnessed some of the most experimental and aesthetically ambitious coinage of the Mughal Empire, incorporating poetic inscriptions, elaborate calligraphy, zodiac motifs, portraiture, and highly decorative arrangements rarely paralleled elsewhere in the Islamic world. Coins such as the present issue were not merely struck for Circulation, but operated as carefully crafted imperial objects intended to project sovereignty, victory, and cultural sophistication.<o:p></o:p>Extremely rare and historically significant, the present rupee featuring the “Fateh” couplet remains one of the most important commemorative issues of Jahangir, linking together the imperial court at Ajmer and the Mughal consolidation of the Deccan.<o:p></o:p>A historically very important coin in Jahangir’s coinage!<o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>
